Welcome from the principal
Dear DeKeyser Families,

My name is Shannon Hathcock and it is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new principal at DeKeyser Elementary.  DeKeyser has a rich history of academic excellence that is a direct result of the partnership between the students, parents, staff, and community.  I am extremely fortunate to be joining such a remarkable team and look forward to working with all of you in providing the best educational program for our students.

I attended Wayne State University to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.  I continued my learning at Saginaw Valley State University and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching majoring in Early Childhood Education.  Currently I attend Oakland University and will soon receive my Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership.  During these last 23 years in Utica Community Schools, I have taught kindergarten through third grade, worked as an Early Literacy Coach, served as the Interim Principal at Burr and Graebner Elementary, and most recently, as the Administrative Intern at West Utica Elementary’s summer school program, while being a wife and mother to my three wonderful children.

My educational philosophy is inherent in my commitment to provide an educational environment that enables all students to succeed.  It is my vision that all staff and students feel confident to take risks in their teaching and learning in a safe and respectful environment.  I believe we will accomplish this through DeKeyser’s long-standing traditions that include high quality academic programs paired with a strong sense of community among families, staff, and students. A great education is one that works in partnership to build curiosity and creative thinking, collaboration through effective communication and cooperative problem solving.  I will keep our students a priority as evidenced through my actions and decisions.  Together, we will continue to cultivate a safe, nurturing school environment that empowers our students to become responsible citizens and lifelong learners.

I am extremely honored to be working with the students, families, and staff of the DeKeyser community.  Knowing that collaboration, cooperation, and communication between the home and school are vital to the achievement and growth of our children, I look forward to our partnership in the years to come.
I am confident that we are going to have an amazing school year as we learn and grow together to help every child succeed.  You will receive a newsletter in Early August highlighting the dates and activities for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.  Upon receiving this letter, please feel free to stop into the office and introduce yourself.  I look forward to meeting you and your DeKeyser Dolphin(s).  In the meantime, I wish you and your family a safe and happy summer.  I cannot wait to begin our new journey together!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hathcock
DeKeyser Elementary Principal
